Today, I’m excited to announce the biggest news in Man Vs. Debt history…

We’re expecting our second child in early November!

We’ve known for a little while now, but with our lifestyle on the road – we wanted to make sure we were able to see a midwife/physician and double confirm everything is moving along healthy. So far, so good!

We’ve been sharing the news with people at the last few meetups (Courtney is showing much earlier this time around!) – and I wanted to take some time to answer some of the common questions that have been coming up. 🙂

Did you plan this?

Yes. Though it happened quickly!

What does this mean for life on the road?

We aren’t 100% sure. For now, we plan to continue everything at the very least into early August. We have a very full schedule still – and as long as Courtney’s health and energy allows it, we’ll likely keep going.

How does Courtney feel in the RV?

Overall, she’s feeling great. She’s much more tired on average than she remembers feeling the first time – and is showing more quickly than the first. I know little about pregnancy, but Courtney claims these are actually common for women their second time around! 🙂

Where will you have the baby?

We’re about 80% sure we’ll have the baby back in Indianapolis. We still have many family and friends there – and until we know that everyone is happy and healthy after the birth – we’ll likely spend that time with our support network. We are also considering home birth, which will be easier for us in our home town. As a bonus, this will also put us back for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

What will you do with the RV? Will you live in it after the baby is born?

We don’t know. We have no plans to get rid of the RV, nor are we convinced that we will stop traveling and settle down. We may do just that, we may continue traveling. We may live in the RV for another year. In short, we are keeping our options open – but won’t make any big decision until the first of the year, after the birth.

Is it a boy or a girl?

As of now, we don’t plan on finding this out ahead of time. We’ll wait for the surprise.

Is Milligan excited?

She seems to understand the situation and is very excited. She’s taken a much bigger interest in babies now – and when people talk about them around her – she is very forthcoming with the fact that “Mommy has a baby in her tummy, TOO!”

Does this change your financial plans or goals?

It doesn’t really affect us drastically. The pregnancy will likely cost at least $4,000-$5,000 out-of-pocket. This is because we have high-deductible insurance (we knew this going into it).

Our primary goals of investing in our business and finishing our student loans will remain the same. We don’t anticipate a huge lifestyle switch (financially at least – mentally this is going to be an adventure!).

If anything, this makes me even more serious about getting the business to the point where I can take most of November and December off. I’d like to work maybe 5-10 hours per week during these months this year – and with some planning and savings this should be very possible.

    Money saving idea (not just for Courtey): Use a midwife. Better care, and as long as things are going well you don’t get a doctor involved. I had the first child at a free standing childbirthing center and the second one with a midwife in a hosp. setting. We had insurance that would pay for 100% with a doctor; I just wanted to use a midwife, and it happens to be cheaper (at least here).

    Congratulations to the whole family! Make sure Courtney gets some extra pampering and rest-keeping up with a little one AND growing a baby is hard work!

    While a homebirth wasn’t an option for us we loved our midwives and our local birth center. It’s definitely more affordable if you pay out of pocket, and assuming everything goes smoothly is a much nicer entry into the world. 🙂

    Congrats!

    We’re expecting our 2nd any day now. For our first we had low-deductible insurance. Now we have a high-deductible, not that it matters because we don’t have the maternity rider. Yes, that means we are paying cash for baby #2. Crazy, huh?

    Given that a delivery can run between $10-15K we knew we had to get creative. I called up the area hospitals (I live in Muncie) and asked them what kind of deal they could give us. I can’t believe this is the state of our lives or insurance, but there you go. As it turns out Community hospital in Anderson is cutting us an awesome deal. Our 2nd insurance-less delivery will likely be cheaper than our first!

    Like anything else, call around and see where you can get a good deal. It turns out that hospitals kind of like delivering babies. It’s one of the few happy things that go down there.

    Congratulations Adam and Courtney!!! SO excited for you both and for Milli too 🙂

    Having two children myself, I can definitely tell you that traveling when the babies were small is VERY doable and since you have extensive experience in this area, I’m sure you’ll do just fine. Would still love to see you if you make it up to New England area (although my original idea of having you here to see fall colors in early October may be cutting it a bit close to the due date!).

    Two kids are great! You’ll definitely have your hands full for a few months after the new arrival.

    Home birth is great, we have friends that did that. Fiona went without any pain meds for both births and we are for all natural child birth. We had a doula in and she was fantastic. We highly recommend the natural route whenever possible.

    I had my second child at home – and it was soooo great…. I’m a huge advocate of home birth – (mommies shouldn’t be forced to be patients… I’ll get off my soap box there 🙂

    Congratulations. I seem to have a sixth sense about these things, so while I didn’t *know* I kind of had a feeling. Baby number two is a lot like baby number one all over again, you never know what to expect, and things after the baby is born definitely chandelier as the did the first time, in different ways. I’ve heard the third child is where it gets easier, adjustment-wise. But I doubt it will really change your overall lifestyle. Get your daughter very involved, we used babycenter and showed our first drawings of babies in the womb, and she really connected with it. Girls are also a lot more nurturing toward babies than boys, so you have practically got it made! We’ve travelled a little with a baby, our son was 7 months old when he took his first cross-country flight and 15 months when we visited my inlaws in Egypt the first time. He did really well, and since you’re already expert travellers with one, two won’t be that big of a stretch. 🙂

    Congratulations! And here’s wishing Courtney a good pregnancy and birth. I hope you guys come up with as good as Milligan again this time ’round. Milligan is one of the best names I’ve ever heard — so unique and gender neutral, yet so classic and feminine when shortened to Millie.

    Congrats! We had been trying since November, but finally conceived last month. Courtney is right on about second (and subsequent) births. Will you plan out and see different midwives on the road? We also plan to travel with babies, but have had another possible setback.

    Congratulations! Both my children were home births (they’re now 32 and 27) so I heartily recommend home birth. Hospitals have come a long way, thankfully, from when I had kids, but nothing can beat the comfort of your own home.

    Congrats to your family! What exciting news. I normally would not comment but wanted to share my experience with you. My husband and I moved into our fifth wheel when my daughter was six months. Little did we know I had just gotten pregnant with our son! I loved this time together and really didn’t mind pregnancy on the road at all. My husband traveled for his job at the time. We came home for a little while just to have the baby and were back to traveling two weeks after he was born. Good luck to you all!

    Just found your blog- no credit cards for my family of four (going to be 5 in Nov) either! Love it. We have homebirthed our first two and are planning it for this one as well. It’s AMAZING. I am also a birth doula & birth photographer. Homebirth = the best care and the best place to birth! Blessings on your experiences!
