The Militia

What the heck is the Man Vs. Debt Militia?

Inspired by Chris Guillebeau’s concept of a “small army”, the MvD Militia is my nickname for the most passionate and active members of the MvD community.

My favorite definition of a militia is “the entire able-bodied population of a community, available to be called to arms.”

What will be required of me?

Nothing.  I’m going to treat this militia as I would a group of trusted advisers.  While I’ll occasionally ask for your help, there will be no strings attached.  No commitment.  It’s simply a home for those ‘raving’ fans would love to play a part in shaping the future direction of the site and community.  (And pick up some free stuff on the way…)  :-)

I don’t want to be spammed…

Do I seem like the type of person that likes spam?  I hate it as much as you do.  Here’s the no bullshit list of my commitment to you:

  • I will never share your e-mail
  • You will always be able to opt-out at the click of a button
  • I will only e-mail you 2-3 times a month at most.

What’s in it for me?

  • Free giveaways.  Books, premium accounts, and random swag passed along to me.
  • Early sneak-peeks at special projects, site additions, and upcoming events.
  • Discounts on my own forthcoming guides and select endorsed services.
  • Super amazing, non-transferable, non-redeemable brownie points.

One more soldier against debt, reporting for duty! Being a college student, I am all too familiar with pursuit to living a simple lifestyle, but being so young I still need the treasured advise of my elders! I’m ready to teach everything I know, and learn everything else!

I’m on board with that as well! Baker, i just recently discovered your blog and am so motivated by finding others working to alleviate financial weight. I’d heard about your trip before, what a great way to help people, by showing. I personally want to challenge the student loan issue not only for myself but all he other grass out there struggling. I’ve got some ideas up my sleeve so hopefully you’ll be seeing my contribution to helping soon!

Keep up the great work Baker. You and your family are an inspiration and proof positive that living on your own terms is not an impossible fantasy.

You’ve done it, we’ve done it…believe me, anyone can do this, if it’s truly what they want to accomplish. Rock on debt-free seekers!

This seems like a really strange idea. Taking random people from the internet and treating them like a board of directors? I’m not interested in what’s in it for *me* so much as what’s in it for *you*, Baker — I don’t see how this benefits you.

Tyler, it’s nice to see you here and not just over on GRS! Thanks for commenting.

I’m not attempting to round up ‘random’ people from the internet. As you know, only a very small percentage of the people that will visit this site are going to comment, let alone subscribe or opt-in to a list like this. I don’t currently have a way to contact those members who would like to be involved more deeply in the site, besides simply posting to everyone.

I find obtaining feedback from the most active and passionate (those willing to opt-in to an e-mail list) to be extremely valuable. Besides the specific feedback, this kind of thing also helps keep me motivated. In the future, many of the members of this group will be the ones willing to help me with future posts, e-books, and project launches.

I see tremendous value in being able to contact those people who *actively* show they want to help. Although, I appreciate you looking out for my best interest. ;-)

I don’t mean to imply that I know something you don’t about this. The opposite in fact — I was just wondering what you knew that I didn’t that would shed some light on the reasoning behind this list.

And although GRS is the personal finance site I read most regularly, I do visit and occasionally post at a variety of others.

You’re not the first to create a team like this, and there certainly is value on both ends. Count me in, “Town Born, turn out.”

Count me in – working our way to being debt-free and doing a pretty decent job at it. We’re at that stage now, though, where it’d be easy to get sidetracked, so maybe this will help me keep with it.

My only financial debt these days is my mortgage. Don’t worry, I’ve racked up plenty of credit card debt and student loans in my life. I’m not sure about paying off the house I currently live in, since I doubt I will want to live here when I finally jump off the 9-5 wagon. (Calling it retirement sounds depressing, it in’t like I want to quit working) I’ve been working on being minimalist in a way that appeals to me: get off of everyone’s mailing list, get rid of/sell/give away anything I don’t use and love, keep priorities simple,…

I’m looking forward to seeing where the militia goes.

Love your website and am fascinated with your journey. Learned of it through a reference to “Buck-Saving Blogs” in the September issue of Scholastic Parenting & Child.
I am working hard to get my family out of debt and sticking to a budget. Haven’t made the jump to selling off stuff mainly because of time constraints. Hoping to get dear hubby on that in the new year!
Keep up the great work! Safe travels!

I think your decision to basically just drop everything and go is amazing. I’m still in the planning stages of making a big move…but it’s great to see someone else actually do it. If you can travel with your wife and young daughter, then a 17 year old with zero commitments should be able to also!

Great Blog. I’ve set a financial goal to be Debt Free by 43 and I am going to DO something everyday to get me closer to that goal.

I only recently started reading blogs and I was thrilled to find communities of like minded people all with the same goal: to LIVE debt free. MVD ranks at the very top of list!

Count us in we need to be debt free before the end of 2014 as we are relocating to the UK permantly from Australia with our four children. We have to sell off everything over the next few years and also pay off 85,000 in debt plus the balance (or most of it) our morgage $245,000 then sell the house.
Any help in paying off this debt and on relocation for us all would be really really appreciated and also telling my mother (a ex british) who I don’t get along with very well and who is also very controlling in the way people should live their lives that we are moving beacuse we feel it is right for us at this time in our lives.

I kinda hate I came across your blog. Cause I love it! Now I have a family as well, and probably the same toddlers as you have – but I have to help my spouse in the kitchen and my kids are setting the neighbours house on fire…
